      <title>Announcing NCLx</title>
      <link>http://skygiant.com.au//announcing-nclx</link>
<description>As you may have seen from previous posts, I use the programming language NCL from NCAR for a lot of my analysis and processing work. Moreover, I find it to be one of the least fiddly plotting engines available to go from &quot;general idea&quot; to &quot;publication quality&quot; in a matter of a few lines of code. Even in situations where I don't use NCL for the processing part, such as when I need to massively parallelise my computations, the plotting engine alone is well worth learning.

      <link>http://skygiant.com.au//cron-running-but-not-working</link>
<description>There is a golden rule by which I live when it comes to programming, if I have to do it more than once it gets automated, scripted up and generally I write a short post to remind myself how and why I did it.

      <link>http://skygiant.com.au//sshfs-on-mac</link>
<description>I have recently reformatted my machine and it turns out that the truly flakey MacPorts has let me down with sshfs. Having tried to install it this morning I have a revised method for getting it to work.

      <link>http://skygiant.com.au//applying-a-function-to-multiple-columns-in-pandas</link>
<description>I am currently in the process of wrangling some Automatic Weather Station (AWS) data into a usable format. However, the space-delimited columnar format is not exactly friendly for a Pandas user.

      <title>Markdown and maths in Atom</title>
      <link>http://skygiant.com.au//markdown-math-in-atom</link>
<description>Atom is a great little editor that comes with Markdown support for both syntax and preview. However, the preview engine is limited and if you are like me and like to put a little maths into your markdown then you will want to track down and install a more advanced package called &quot;markdown-preview-plus&quot;.

      <title>Format a broken USB on Mac</title>
      <link>http://skygiant.com.au//format-a-broken-usb-on-mac</link>
<description>In testing out Windows 10 and El Capitan on a variety of machines I soon found out that the flashing process had baked my brand new 16GB USB stick, the thing wouldn't boot nor allow me to reformat under OSX or windows. Trying to reformat under Disk Utility came up with the super-helpful error message &quot;Name Invalid&quot; and no clear direction on how to fix it.

      <link>http://skygiant.com.au//day-one</link>
<description>Today I began my PhD journey at the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies in Hobart, Tasmania. As expected, there was little set up in advance and my day was a flurry of running about the building talking to the people I need to know and awaiting the administrivia that will grant me enough access to be dangerous.
